Guess what? - I've got a copy of the Caighdeán Nua (pdf doc). Hurray!!! Just one problem - I hear they are not going to use it. Apparently after huge work and widespread consultation, Foras na Gaeilge/An Coiste Téarmaíochta/An Gúm were ready to publish the new caighdeán. Then there was a change in government. The new caighdeán was dropped and Rannóg an Aistriúcháin was tasked with coming up with a new caighdeán!!! Apparently An Coiste Téarmaíochta and Rannóg an Aistriúcháin are rivals in some ways i.e. they disagree as to who is more important. I may have my government bodies mixed up a bit but that's the general thrust of things. Another huge waste of time and money

How recent is this decision? I haven't heard any news coverage and google hasn't turned up anything. Any sources where we can find out more about this?

The reason I have the new Caighdeán doc on pdf is because I got it (only slightly indirectly) from a person who was part of the process of producing it (That person works for An Coiste Téarmaíochta as far as I know). The info I have came from that person. That information may well not be in the mainstream media yet. I have been given the strong impression that far from keeping this information quiet, there is a desire among at least some who worked on it to let the truth be known.

Okay, next question: How sensible/controversial/infuriating are the recommendations that Foras na Gaeilge came up with?

Well over here there are still officially two different ways of writing Provençal and then there's a whole host of other forms of Occitan that are written just the way they want (not forgetting Catalan) - I've recently seen a forum about different local forms of Breton and how they're transcribed and how they don't understand each other - in Alsace the local television is criticized for being in haut-rhinois or not as the case may be - in the Jura, you get the news on the television from over the border in Romanche, but it has captions for the hard of hearing, so at least you can read what he's saying - there's le Parler Poitou which is something the Romans left behind (Bakery Street = rue de la Panification) and then there's Picard, Savoyard sorry Savoisien, Lorrain, Basque, Vendéen, Flemish, Chti, Nissard, Monégasque, Corsican (every village has their own - ours is in Balagna, but you don't pronounce the last syllable and they have lenition at the beginning of a word after a full stop and in the middle, but the spelling doesn't show it)...... do you want me to go on?

I've only had a glance really but it seems more inclusive than before. Its aim was to iron out inconsistencies. I can email it to you if you PM me with your email address.

dála 'n scéil char úsáid mé 'n CO roimhe sin agus má athrann siad é féin, chan úsáideam é ach an oiread ach amháin má thaghann siad Gaeilg Ghaoth Dobhair mar chaighdeán oifigiúil

I'm after having a look at the new Standard rules.
And this is one of the new things:

Quote:
ní dúirt mé nó níor
dhúirt mé

but... who says "níor dhúirt mé" /N'i:r ɣu:rt' m'e:/?
Nobody, as far as I know. Here they are giving recognition to a form nobody uses.
Those who use "níor" say "níor ú(i)rt", there's no lenited d there, simply because the independent form that people use, is "ú(i)rt", and the d' is understood as the d' in "d'ól mé" etc.

D'ól mé > níor ól mé
D'úirt mé > níor úirt mé.

Looks like those who've modified the CO didn't understand that (unless they did that on purpose, but why?), although it's quite easy to understand and it has been described in Stair na Gaeilge and I guess, several articles.

They give "níonn" for Ulster Irish for "does", but it should be spelt "ghníonn" because it's the etymological form and because one needs to make a difference between "he does" and "he washes".
They give "chí" for Ulster Irish for "sees", but it should be spelt "tchí" because it comes from "at-c(h)í"... If we write "chí" it means it's pronounced /x'i:/, while it's /t'i:/...
And why didn't they recognize "tearn" or "tearr" as the dependent form of "déan" in the preterite, while the Munster and Connachta have been recognized?

Slapdash work...

*sigh*
