Dia Dhaoibh :)

I have a few words (amongst many) that I am really wondering about because dictionaries haven't been of much help here, so if any one can help it would be awesome!

Ais
Ródheas
Modhúill
i gceart

And I know that bhfuil is used to form questions, but what does it actually mean? And raibh, now that I think of it! (I have some guesses, but they don't work in all context.)

Any help on any of these would be great!!

Im a beginer so please someone correct me if im wrong on any of these

Ais = back
ródheas = too nice or very nice
Modhúill = ??
i gceart = right (ceart is right this is just the eclipsed version one of them weird irish grammer rules :) )

what Bhfuil means depends on the context of the question.

An bhfuil mé? - Am I?
An bhfuil tú? - Are you?
An bhfuil sé? - Is he?
An bhfuil sí? - Is she?
An bhfuilimid?/ bhfuil muid? - Are we?
An bhfuil sibh? - Are you(plural)?
An bhfuil siad? - Are they?

sometimes things are just done differently in irish and would have no direct translation to english on why it is done that way as my teacher would say accept it and it will give you less headaches :)

Haha! Very good advice, there. I'll remember that. Go raibh maith agat. I never consider that ródheas could be like "ró" and "deas"

An cheapann tu (is that right?) modhúill could be a mix of "mo" and "dúil"?

The line is from a song and it is:

Do hata is do ghúna, do éadan ródheas modhúil

Oh, and I just remembered a few words I forgot (haha) from earlier:

Théimse
Rétithe

Dia's Muire dhuit, a Anabeth.

ar ais is "back"
ródheas is "too nice" but probably just means "very nice" in an older context.
modhúil is "mild, gentle, modest"
i gceart can be "right" or "well" or "properly"
téimse "I'll go"
réitithe is the past participle of "réitigh". We'd probably have to see the context to give you a meaning for it, as réitigh has many meanings.

Tá/níl is a mixture of two verbs, and fuil. Níl comes from ní fhuil => ní 'uil => níl. The question form of fuil is an bhfuil, dependant form go bhfuil/nach bhfuil, etc.

Similarly, the past tense bhí/ní raibh is a also mixture of two verbs bhí and raibh.

Hope that makes sense.

It's getting closer to making sense... :)

And the context, actually, is all from one verse, which is:

Nuair a théimse fhéin ar mhargadh gan beann agam ar aon ar
Mo chapall is mo chóiste réitithe amach i gceart
Do hata is do gúna, do éadan ródheas modhúil
Ag gáiri liom go taithneamhach, 'do shuí le m'ais

:GRMA: < I love this thing.

I love that smilie too. :GRMA:

Breandán made it. In fact it must be time for a new addition as Gaeilge. He surely has more time on his hands now that his travel visa does not allow him to travel to all destinations these days...

When I myself go to market unbeholden to any man
My horse and my coach decked out properly
Your hat and your dress and your lovely gentle face
Smiling at me pleasantly, you sitting by my side.

There's something wrong with the Irish in the first line. This is a guess at fixing it.

Here ais is "side".

:S ?

And okay, yes. That first line is confusing now that I know what the rest means... Thanks for the suggestion!

Would you know what the following lines are:

Grá mo chroí mo chuilín, Sláinte geall mo chuilín

Rachaidh mé thar farraige nuair a chaithfear ráithe an gheimridh
‘S triallfaidh mé ar Albain mar ar chaith mé tús mo shaoil,
Beidh ainnirín in éindí liom le dhul i mbun an tsaoil ann
Gheall sí fhéin go dtiocfadh sí ‘s go bhfanóidh sí liom.

:GRMA: :GRMA: :GRMA: :GRMA: (Do I have to do that 1000 times to specify "Go raibh mííle maith agat? )
