A list like that really needs to be indexed to be useful. To do this you need to find the key word or words in each phrase, and make a headword from it..

Jay Bee (or any other volunteer) if you have a spare moment perhaps you could go through it and change the entries in the following manner:

Change entries like "We agreed that ..." to "agree - We agreed that ..."

From an entry like "In principle that is true, but ..." make two entries:

"principle - In principle that is true, but ..."
"true - In principle that is true, but ..."

If a sort is applied to the resulting list the phrases will be grouped according to the key word words instead of the first word in the phrase which is often something less useful like "in" or "I".

With respect to Breandán, I'm not sure if listing the phrases by alphabet is suitable for the learner, and I say this having tried to teach conversation to literally thousands of students, for what is logically tidy is not always so useful to someone looking for a given phrase at any one time. I'm not saying its never useful, but when the goal is on the fly speech construction, it won't work

In fact, while I've cathegorized the list functionally below, even doing might not do much, as function is very often context dependent, meaning one has to take into account previous utterances, before choosing a particular phrase.

For example, the original creator of the list has not separated out markers from increments explicitly, and within the increment category, objective statements from those showing the speaker's affectual position towards a proposition. Depending on the tone of voice used and context, the function (and therefore) meaning of a phrase can change quite radically

For example, an objective statement:

A: that hoover there, [it's] very good
B: I see

A comment:

A: That young O'Toole, he crashed his car again [statement]
B: Very good! [sarcastic commentary]

Or it can just operate as a marker of understanding:

A: The cows are all in now
B: very good


As for the categorization, it's only a quick attempt. I think it is better to be more concerned about the functional of what goes into them, than the phrases themselves. Many of them are only useful for written text, or for public speech. What we would be more interested in are good wholesome everyday ways of saying things that allow one to structure one's ideas and engage in naturalistic discourse. What is here, can be modified, should anyone so wish

Well, actually, when I see big lists like this I get information overload and since I have an obsessive-compulsive disposition, so if I get information overload, then it is pretty well assured that most ordinary people will.

The purpose of arranging the list alphabetically was to use it as a reference.

What you've done above, grouping the phrases functionally, is another way to break down a big useless list into more digestible chunks.

Other ways to break up lists are to get actual frequency data and learn the more frequently used phrases in the target language. In a way that would be much more useful than trying to translate a list of English idioms into Irish.

We really should be gathering together a list of native idioms anyway, not trying to translate what we might say in English. Grouping those functionally and then further arranging them by degrees can be quite useful.

The first and simplest such list I ever learned was the go adjectives:

Go hiontach
Go hálainn
Go haoibhinn
Go breá
Go deas
Go maith
Go dona
Go holc

These adjectives always appear with go in the predicate. Here they have been grouped in rough order of "intensity" from good to bad. There is more art than science in this list but it does help give a sense of where they fit on a scale or spectrum of meaning.

Other phrases in Jay Bee's groupings could be similarly scaled by intensity, for instance from polite to impolite, or from friendly to hostile, mild to harsh, etc.

IN fact, with a big enough list, you could do a few at a time, alphabetical within functional groups that are spectrumized over a given parametre

I was just thinking your categorised list looks very much like the one I saw in the appendix of the Collins French Dictionary.

Grouped that way, you can search for ideas for phrases, and learn clusters, according to particular objectives. (Love the color coding too. )

The brain learns and remembers by interlinking information so the more different ways you cross-reference material (visually as well as semantically) the better the information is assimilated and retained.

The advantage we have in the computer age is that we can key-word search a computerized list like that, if we need to do so. That being the case, I think a topic- and/or function-oriented list is better. That's how I satisfy my OCD impulses, anyway. I have lists of terms/expressions arranged by topics such as "time", "direction/location", "family/relatives", "adjectives" (where I put opposites or gradations in expression together), etc.

Yes, you are quite right, Caoimhín. My brain is still partly (mostly? ) geared to the analog world. Besides, the phrases would all be in the FGB and De Bhaldraithe in alphabetical order anyway so there's really no need for aphabetization at all.
