The "-ín" in Cailín is definitely diminutive. Compare
cailleach "old woman" with
cailín "young woman"
I think what you mean is that without the "-ín" it is not a stand-alone word, right?
That is definitely true. "puimp" or "pump" are not Irish words. In fact, "puimpcín" is also not a real Irish word. Pumpkins are not from Ireland, as we all know. But then again. Neither are potatoes!
