Can someone please explain to me the difference between:

"Imeacht gan teacht chughat" and "Imeacht gan teacht ort" ?

With only the one different word you'd think I could figure it out...

Also is this the equivalent of "Get lost" in English, or is it stronger, more along the lines of "F*ck off" ?

It's closer to "f*ck off"

Perhaps your difficulty is because in the standard it should be spelled chugat

both "chuig" and "ar" can be used in curses/blessings with the meaning of "let X happen to you" or "let X befall you"
i.e. Dia le cabhair chuige ... Beannacht Dé ort

Although I am not sure by any means, to me these both seem an appropriate and equivalent way to express "begone and do not return"

I'd think it depends on the particular phrase. In some phrases chuig/chun may be appropriate but not here.
"Chugat" following verbs of motion means "towards you".
E.g. (Go dtaga) Dia le cabhair chugat = May God come to you as a help. Here "towards you" is meant.

I had never heard "imeacht gan teacht" with any other preposition than "ar".
A preposition meaning "towards" doesn't make any sense here.

Redwolf, I got the first one off the old forum many years ago and saved it with a list of other insults.

I got "Bailigh as" from there as well, and now I see that also might be incorrect, maybe should be "Bailigh leat" instead?

As we say in Conamara: Imeacht gan thíocht ort.
It sounds like it just means go and never come back. But it is supposed to be nasty so I'm guessing your death is implied there.




I'd say "bailigh leat". It only means "go away". It's not really a swearword.
