I'm stuck on - 'may be no bad companion'.

Here's the context - It occurred to him, however, before setting out on this adventure that a plough-iron (ploughshare - soc céachta) may be no bad companion, as, from experience, he knew it was an excellent knock-down argument, having, on more occasions than one, settled a little disagreement very quietly;

Rith sé leis, mar sin féin, roimh imeacht dó ar an eachtra seo.......

Would this work ? - go mb'fhéidir go mbainfí feidhim as soc céachta.

D'fheadfeadh úsáid mhaith a bheith agam dhó.
I could have a good use for it.

The question I'm always asking myself is, in cases like this - does this kind of expression, as used here in Irish English, come directly from Irish or not ? Apparently not.
