I'd say:

Cén bhliain ar rugadh é?
Cén áit ar rugadh é?
Cén bhliain a bhfuair sé bás?
Cén áit a bhfuair sé bás?

Actually, in written Irish, after place or time questions, normally you use the indirect relative except after "cén uair" and "cathain".

Why thank you! That is exactly what I wasn't sure about. Because I knew "cén uair" and "cathain" being direct I didn't know if "cén bhliain" would be direct also or not!

But it should still be: right?

Maybe there are people who say "cén bhliain a fuair" etc. But it's not logical (actually, saying "cén uair a fuair" and "nuair a fuair" aren't logical either... but it's the way everybody says it).



yes because in this case, "cé mhéad bliain" is the object of the verb (to spend x years) so it's the direct relative.

The more traditional form is the indirect relative clause, but both occur and both are correct (though I would recommend an indirect relative clause).
I suppose this is the reason:
Such nouns as "bliain" can be part of a sentence in accusative case and acting as a temporal adverbial. ("Bhí mé ann an bhliain seo caite")
Because it is adverbial an indirect relative clause is correct (an bhliain a raibh mé ann.)
Because it is accusative (or even "common") case a direct relative clause is correct (an bhliain a bhí mé ann)

The same is true for "áit" as a local adverbial.
But here indirect relative is more prevalent so that "cén áit a fuair" can be considered incorrect.

Only the direct relative is correct here because cén bhliain is not a temporal adverbial here but the object of caith, to spend.
