Dia dhaoibh ar fad,

Having read the following expression:

"Deis os cionn €200 a ghrúchtáil ! "

I tried to find more information about the verb "a ghrúchtáil" online but there is not very much useful information.

Is this a slang expression? What is the verbal noun form? Is this a verb specific to Connemara Irish?
Any information would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Beannachtaí

I think it means "available" (as in to win). It's probably a slang term, I can't find much reference to it online bar active Irish Twitter users using it, which would lend credence to the idea that's it's slang. I've heard it once or twice before myself.

Also, I could be wrong but "le grúchtáil" would make more sense to me than "a ghrúchtáil" in this case but that's another issue.

Is it gnóthachtáil with Cois Fhairrge pronunciation?

From FGB: deis a ghnóthú - 'to win a prize'. g(h)nóthachtáil, as suggested by Lughaidh, might be a Connemara variant, and ghrúchtáil just a phonetic spelling of it?
I agree with Gumbi: it should be le not a.

"Prize of more than 200 euro to be won"

Wiktionary seems to confirm that, it gives gnóthachtáil as Cois Fharraige variant of gnóthú with pronunciation /ˈɡɾˠuːxt̪ˠɑːlʲ/ (so like grúchtáil). But am not sure what this Wiktionary entry is based on.

Are you sure it should be le? I was talking with a native speaker friend from the dialect area, and he likes a there, saying that le implies that it's the opportunity that can be won.

He gave me these samples:

Tá deis os cíonn €200 a ghrúchtáil and tá os cionn €200 le grúchtáil. I wonder if it's because deis is the subject of the original, which could, perhaps be written as Tá deis ann os cionn €200 a ghrúchtáil.

I misread the original.

"200 euro le grúchtáil" "200 euro (available) to be won"

"deis 200 euro a ghrúchtáil" "chance to win 200 euro"

Apologies :P

Oops! I misread the entry in FGB: it's duais a ghnóthú -'to win a prize', not deis. So I was seeing it as "a prize of over 200 to be won" instead of "an opportunity to win over 200". :hide: Obviously then, a - not le - is correct.

Yep that's one of our Conamara words. It means "to win".
