I was just wondering, for a headstone, what is the difference between "d'éag" and "fuair bás".

I see from the local cemetery, from the sample of 11 Irish language headstones that I happened to come across, that it's 6:4 for "fuair bás" (one was bhásaigh). The sample was probably taken more from recent headstones. I'm kind of stuck between the two until I understand more the difference between them and which might be more appropriate.

In the Teanglann dictionary, there are several verbs for this in Irish.

"Éag" was the verb "to die", where as "faigh bás" was a colloquialism. "Éag" is more formal.

Yeah, don't you see "éag" as regards the dead person in the leabhar combhróin (book of condolences)? At least I remember so one time.

Edit: it just came to me. "Data éaga" for date of passing.

And cailleadh é/í/iad as well.
