Thank you in advance for all your effort here. Great site
I'm looking to have my children's names tattooed in Ogham. it will be vertical, not horizontal
Dylan
Colin
Paisley
From my understanding the names are written from to to bottom?
Thank you again
Here is a link to a site with links to all sorts of info on and help with Ogham:
http://www.evertype.com/standards/og/ogmharc.htmlOne issue you're going to have is that there is no letter "y" in traditional Ogham, although I think some people have created an artificial version of Ogham with added letters.
Another issue you may not be aware of is that Dylan is not an Irish name, and comes from Welsh (think Dylan Thomas). There is an Irish surname of Dillon (
Diolúin in Irish), but it is of Hiberno-Norman origin (one of my great-great-grandmothers was a Dillon).
The name Paisley is also not Irish, although there are Ulster Scots with that as their surname (the most famous being the deceased preacher and politician Ian Paisley). The surname (and the location(s) in Scotland from which it comes) comes from the Middle Irish word
baslec, borrowed from the Latin
basilica, and essentially means "place with a church". It eventually ended up as Paisley in Scotland, and was brought to Ireland in that form as a surname..
Colin is an Irish name, and has several derivations, and thus several forms in Irish, including
Cóilín, Coilín, and
Coileán.
If you want to punt the Ogham as being a problem and instead use an older script for writing Irish, you can use the font choices above on this forum, resulting in:
Dylan
Colin / Cóilín / Coilín / Coileán
Paisley
