Up until now, I thought that the initial r was always broad but, when I looked up the pronunciation of riamh on Teanglann, I saw that, in Connaught (or part of it, at least), riamh starts with a slender r.

http://www.teanglann.ie/en/fuaim/riamh

So I assume there are exceptions to this rule.

I just thought that hearing an initial slender r in Irish was a very special moment, like running into a shiny Pokémon.

Teanglann.ie doesn't makes sense anyway, they ask people from the 3 main areas to pronounce loads of words that don't exist in their dialect. Like "Freisin" pronounced in Ulster Irish. Wtf ? Why not "fá dtaobh domh" in Munster Irish? That's nonsense. Same problem with the book "Fuaimeanna".
