I have tried to quote a section of a post several times but it seems to only allow me to quote the entire post. Am I missing something? :bash:

You are not the only one who has had trouble. I think the newer version of phpBB works differently from what we are used to:

1. If you press the Quote button on the right hand side of someone's post when reading the forum, it opens up a reply box with that post quoted in full. Go to 3.

2. If you want to quote snippets from different people's posts. Press the big Reply button on the left (next to New Topic). This opens up an empty reply box. Go to 3.

3. Once inside the Reply box you can select and quote bit and pieces from any of the list of previous posts under the reply box by selecting text and pressing the nearest quote button.

Either way you can do the snippets once in the reply box. You can't do selective quoting before that.

Hope that helps. :D

Brendan

Works perfectly. And here's the proof. Grma.

Another question: have you given up the rest of your life at the moment as I only asked the question a few minutes ago and here it is - sorted.

Oh, my wife threatened to leave me for spending too much time here but we got that sorted too. Took a bit longer than a couple of minutes though.

(Someone else had already asked me the quote question previously in private. And to keep the wife around I had to go and dig the garden. :D )

Bí cúramach. B'fhéidir go chuirfidh sí tú ar díol ar an bhforum eile!

Moi :D

It's a bit more finicky that way, but at least it works.

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

I haven’t messed around with phpBB (especially not version 3), but if you can somehow manage to enable the quick-reply box, the functionality should come back, theoretically.

My guess is that the code executed by the quote buttons is the same always:
  1. Check if there’s a textarea element on the page with the name ‘message’
  2. If yes, check if any text is currently selected
    • If yes, append the selected text in quote tags to the innerHTML value of the ‘message’ textarea
    • If no, redirect to posting.php
  3. If no, redirect to posting.php

So if there’s a quick-reply box on the posts page itself, it would probably do as we’re used from ‘over there’—but that quick-reply box has to be enabled first, and I seem to recall an admin on another board I frequent saying that this had been made ridiculously cumbersome in phpBB3 (whereas it was a piece of cake in phpBB2).

It can actually be enabled very simply, but whereas the previous site gave us a fully-fledged editor the same as the reply box, "quick reply" by default is a text-only input system with no access to the síntí fada buttons or smilies. :(

I could hack the code, certainly, but in the end it will be easier if people get used to hitting "Reply" to access the full editor.

Hmm … maybe I’m the lone one here, but I would personally much rather have access to the quick-reply box without the full editor (since I never use anything in the full editor, anyway), than having to load a new page for replying (which I’ve always loathed, even before they invented the quick-reply box).

If it can be enabled easily, this particular user would really love that. :stoning:

Sorry, kk. I tried the Quick Reply last night and it didn't help the quoting situation at all. I also looked into a mod that would give the Quick Reply all the functionality of the Reply Box, but it is somewhat risky installing it and there still appear to be quoting issues once it is installed.

My view on the convenience of Quick Reply is that this is not that fast-paced a forum - it's not a race - and I'd like people to consider their replies carefully before posting. (Not that _you_ don't, you are a very thoughtful poster. )

So, click the Reply button and take a deep breath while you formulate a careful answer - and the Reply Box will be ready before you are. ;)
