When I saw this thread, I didn't realise it was an old one being resurrected and got very excited. I thought Scooby was back!

I wonder if any serious consideration has been given to using a full dialect, eg Ros Muc, as a standard? Has the idea been properly discussed? It would be interesting. Maybe they could leave the written CO as it is for now - and focus on the audio/spoken form - and set up a radio station where every speaker was guaranteed to speak in Ros Muc Irish? So that listeners could tune in and learn a real thing? I think this feeds into Scooby's idea that there could be a caighdeán nua. Or we could go back to Ogham? :^:

I don't think so. I don't know why they have chosen to create an artificial dialect...
In order not to favour any dialect? Cool, now in all Gaeltachtaí there are people who think they native dialect is wrong and they choose not to transmit the language to their children. What a good idea.

Well, the policy of the State is to kill off Irish. I mean, it is partially the Anglo-Irish state with more modern parts added on, so what would one expect

Jay Bee, i think you have spotted something there, but there was very little in the way of a state in the pre-World War I period. In 19th England the state spent 7% of GDP - and it may be that less of the money made its way to Ireland (as the central bureaucracy was based in London), and so state spending in Ireland may have been less than this. There was virtually no Anglo-Irish state.

I think you could refine it to say: the modern Irish Establishment (the wider ruling class) is an outgrowth of the 19th-century Anglo-Irish elite, which it assimilated to in terms of attitudes, and the state they created - virtually from scratch in 1922 - reflects that.

There is quite a continuity in thought and approach between the Anglo-Irish of the Protestant Ascendancy - who thought of the Irish-speaking Gaels as "boggers", because they didn't speak English and were living in the countryside (and other things, including religious factors), and the CO elite, who seem to regard the residents of the Gaeltacht as "boggers", because they don't speak what they regard as the more refined, albeit artificial language and vocabulary of the CO, and are "just" countryfolk.

At no point has the real language ever been regarded as worth a bean - not by the Anglo-Irish gentry, nor by the Irish government officials charged with propagating the Official Standard. Actually, it's worse than that - some of the Anglo-Irish gentry could speak good dialectal Irish...

Good point and shows just how separated from the springwell of Gaelic history the State is, and also how unimportant Ireland was to Britain with makes how important the relationship seemed/s to people as rather sad

How these people tinker with their Caighdeán Oifigiúil is of no consequence to me.
They can have their artificial "Caighdeáinis", I'll continue learning Irish :D

cf. Israel, where speakers of Sephardic Hebrew, a language transmitted natively through generations, are looked down on by speakers of "Modern" Hebrew, an artificial language written just over a century ago that has mutated heavily through the errors of thousands of learners....

not natively: before the state of Israel was created, Hebrew was only a liturgic language, it ceased to be transmitted natively many centuries ago (even at Jesus Christ's time, the Jews spoke Aramaic, not Hebrew anymore ; only rabbis would master Hebrew, and not natively -- just like Latin nowadays among Catholic priests).

Well, the Ashkenazim will bring European elements into Hebrew grammar, from German, Polish and other languages. The Sephardim, having remained in countries now speaking Arabic, are likely to have a more Semitic style in their Hebrew?
