http://www.cairnwater.co.uk/gaelicdictionary/ . Of course, your post may not mean what I think it means which is that you are finding it difficult to locate a number of words for the dictionary you are making. Feel free to ignore my post if you were just enquiring about the weather!

Yeah, I said I'm making a French-Gaelic dictionary (Scottish, I mean) and there are words (not so many) that I didn't find in any dictionary (online as well as paper ones I have, which are quite comprehensive though). I didn't find them in the online dictionaries you recommended me.
I asked for help on another forum and nobody answered, even though some do know these words because they are fluent or even native speakers, I think. So I hope somebody will be glad to help me here...

You know far more Gàidhlig than I do, Lughaidh, but I have the MacBain, Dwelly, and MacLennan dictionaries (also the 2-volume Watson dictionary set, although that's much more recent, plus some other, briefer modern dictionaries), and would be happy to look in them for your words, if you haven't already done that.

I won't ask all my words in one message, but I'll start with these:

the Scottish equivalent of the French baccalauréat (a diploma you pass when you are about 18 and that you need to register in a university, for instance) (+g. + nom pl)

baguette (of bread -- if there's a Gaelic way to say that!) (+g. + nom pl)

a comic book, a strip cartoon book (+g. + nom pl)

to cross out (a word, a sentence) (+verbal noun)

to slobber, to dribble (+verbal noun)

On Am Faclair Beag for, - bon appétit, enjoy your meal! they give - ith do leor (with a fada on the 'o' in leor), ith do shàth and - làmh fhada is cead a sineadh! (with a fada on the 'i' in sineadh) - which seems a bit surprising, mais voilà.

Giving an exact equivalent for le bac is complicated as students who reach the end of their secondary education and wish to go to university or to enrole for further training or start work take what are known as National Qualifications - in each subject matter, so there's not one single qualification like le bac. It's all explained on the Education Scotland website and in Scots Gaelic there's -

I wasn't able to find too much. The more comprehensive dictionaries are older, and most of these terms are newish.


I found the verb "to hitch-hike", sir lioft ["seek a lift"], but not a noun form.


Couldn't find an equivalent. They probably just use the French, as English does.


I found dealbh-èibhinn for a single-frame cartoon [may also mean a cartoon film], but not a whole book.
Perhaps leabhar-èibhinn, by analogy?
