THE IRISH LANGUAGE VERSION

Molaimis a misneach!

An tseachtain seo, tá alt in Gaelscéal scríofa ag Donncha Ó hÉallaithe maidir le ‘Teilifís na Gaeltachta’, an stáisiún bradach a bhunaigh gníomhairí teanga i gConamara in 1987.
Mar gheall ar an eachtra seo, sa deireadh thiar thall, tháinig TG4 ar an saol (Teilifís na Gaeilge a bhí air i dtús ama).
Chuir an grúpa seo a lámha ina bpócaí féin agus bhailigh siad airgead chun an eachtra seo a dhéanamh.
Is cinnte go rabhadar ag feachtasaíocht ar gach bealach roimhe seo agus gurb é seo an rogha dheireanach a bhí acu.
I ndeireadh na dála, is cumhachtaí gníomh ná focail agus chuaigh siad i mbun ghnímh, gníomh a bhí ‘bradach’.
Cinnte, bhí an gníomh seo mídhleathach, mar a bhí go leor rudaí a rinne Mahatma Gandhi agus mar a bhí gníomh Rosa Parks nuair a dhiúltaigh sí a suíochán a ghéilleadh do dhuine den chine geal.
In amanna, is riachtanach an rud é an dlí a bhriseadh chun cearta daonna a bhaint amach agus b’amhlaidh sin sa chás seo.
Tá an Ghaeilge ag dul i léig sna Gaeltachtaí i gcónaí ach faraor is róshéimh atá ár gcainteoirí dúchais.
Seans go bhfuil Gaeilgeoirí na Galltachta ‘níos radacaí’ agus ní cinnte sin, go fóill féin is í Gluaiseacht na Gaeilge an ghluaiseacht teanga is coimeádaí ar an saol.
Tá go leor le foghlaim ó mhuintir ‘Theilifís na Gaeltachta’ is léir. Molaimis a misneach.

SENTENCES TRANSLATED

Molaimis a misneach!
Let us praise their courage!

An tseachtain seo, tá alt in Gaelscéal scríofa ag Donncha Ó hÉallaithe maidir le ‘Teilifís na Gaeltachta’, an stáisiún bradach a bhunaigh gníomhairí teanga i gConamara in 1987.
This week, there is an article by Donncha Ó hÉallaithe written in Gaelscéal regarding ‘Teilifís na Gaeltachta’ (‘The Television of the Irish Speaking District’), the pirate station that language activists founded in Conamara in 1987.

Mar gheall ar an eachtra seo, sa deireadh thiar thall, tháinig TG4 ar an saol (Teilifís na Gaeilge a bhí air i dtús ama).
Because of this event, at long last, TG4 came about (Teilifís na Gaeilge = The Irish language television, it was called at the beginning).

(NB: an eachtra = the deed, event, adventure, happening, incident etc. - basically anything that went on - Go to http://www.potafocal.com - they do a great job of explaining this word with lots of examples.)

Chuir an grúpa seo a lámha ina bpócaí féin agus bhailigh siad airgead chun an eachtra seo a dhéanamh.
This group put their hands into their own pockets and collected money to do this deed/event.

Is cinnte go rabhadar ag feachtasaíocht ar gach bealach roimhe seo agus gurb é seo an rogha dheireanach a bhí acu.
It is certain that they were campaigning in every way before this and that this was the last choice they had.

I ndeireadh na dála, is cumhachtaí gníomh ná focail agus chuaigh siad i mbun ghnímh, gníomh a bhí ‘bradach’.
In the end, an action is stronger/more powerful than words and they went into action, a ‘pirate’ action.

Cinnte, bhí an gníomh seo mídhleathach, mar a bhí go leor rudaí a rinne Mahatma Gandhi agus mar a bhí gníomh Rosa Parks nuair a dhiúltaigh sí a suíochán a ghéilleadh do dhuine den chine geal.
Certainly, this action was illegal, as were many things that Mahatma Gandhi did and as was the deed of Rosa Parks when she refused to yield her seat to a person of the white race.

In amanna, is riachtanach an rud é an dlí a bhriseadh chun cearta daonna a bhaint amach agus b’amhlaidh sin sa chás seo.
Betimes, it is a necessary thing to break the law to achieve human rights and this was so in this case.

Tá an Ghaeilge ag dul i léig sna Gaeltachtaí i gcónaí ach faraor is róshéimh atá ár gcainteoirí dúchais.
The Irish language is getting weaker in the Irish speaking districts and unfortunately/sadly our native speakers are too quiet/mellow.

(NB: See http://www.potafocal.com for the word ‘séimh’ - lots of examples and explanations there.)

Seans go bhfuil Gaeilgeoirí na Galltachta ‘níos radacaí’ agus ní cinnte sin, go fóill féin is í Gluaiseacht na Gaeilge an ghluaiseacht teanga is coimeádaí ar an saol.
Perhaps the Irish speakers of the English speaking area(s) are ‘more radical’ and this is not certain, even yet ‘Gluaiseacht na Gaeilge’ (The Irish Language Movement) is the most conservative language movement in the world.

(NB: coimeádach = conservative, níos coimeádaí = more conservative, is coimeádaí = most conservative. Again, have a look at potafocal.com under ‘coimeádach’)

Tá go leor le foghlaim ó mhuintir ‘Theilifís na Gaeltachta’ is léir. Molaimis a misneach.
There is a lot to learn from the folks of Teilifís na Gaeltachta (The Irish language television) it is clear. Let us praise their courage.
