Filleann an Feall ar an bhFeallaire

An tseachtain seo caite, den chéad uair riamh, gearradh téarma príosúin ar iar-Phríomhaire na hIodáile, Silvio Berlusconi, as calaois a bhaineann le ceannach Mediaset, a chomhlacht mór meáin.
Íslíodh an téarma sin go láithreach, beagnach, go bliain amháin áfach.
Tá dhá cheart acomhairc ag Silvio Berlusconi sular féidir é a chur i gcillín príosúin - sin dlí a chuir sé féin ar na leabhair.
Shílfeá go raibh a fhios aige go mbeadh sé de dhíth air lá éigin.
Ach bímis soiléir; ní chaithfidh an tUasal Berlusconi oiread is lá sa phríosún - chinntigh sé sin nuair a chuaigh sé leis an pholaitíocht. Déarfadh go leor gurb é sin an fáth a ndeachaigh sé leis an bpolaitíocht sa chéad dul síos.
Mar sin féin, den chéad uair, tá téarma príosúin gearrtha air. Tá an-dochar déanta air an uair seo agus tá buille buailte ar son an daonlathais.
Filleann an feall ar an bhfeallaire is cosúil.

Filleann an Feall ar an bhFeallaire
Treachery returns to the betrayer / The evil deed returns to the evil doer
What goes around comes around

An tseachtain seo caite, den chéad uair riamh, gearradh téarma príosúin ar iar-Phríomhaire na hIodáile, Silvio Berlusconi, as calaois a bhaineann le ceannach Mediaset, a chomhlacht mór meáin.
Last week, for the first time ever, the ex-Prime Minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi, was sentenced to a prison term for fraud in connection with the buying of Mediaset, his big media company.

Íslíodh an téarma sin go láithreach, beagnach, go bliain amháin áfach.
This term was lowered immediately, almost, to one year however.

Tá dhá cheart acomhairc ag Silvio Berlusconi sular féidir é a chur i gcillín príosúin - sin dlí a chuir sé féin ar na leabhair.
Silvio Berlusconi has two rights of appeal before he can be put into a prison cell - that is a law he himself put on the books.

Shílfeá go raibh a fhios aige go mbeadh sé de dhíth air lá éigin.
You would think that he knew that he would need it some day.

Ach bímis soiléir; ní chaithfidh an tUasal Berlusconi oiread is lá sa phríosún - chinntigh sé sin nuair a chuaigh sé leis an pholaitíocht.
But let us be clear; Mr Berlusconi will not spend as much as a day in prison - he made sure of that when he went into politics.

Déarfadh go leor gurb é sin an fáth a ndeachaigh sé leis an bpolaitíocht sa chéad dul síos.
Enough people would say that that was the reason he went into politics in the first place.

Mar sin féin, den chéad uair, tá téarma príosúin gearrtha air.
Even so, for the first time, he is sentenced to a prison term.

Tá an-dochar déanta air an uair seo agus tá buille buailte ar son an daonlathais.
He has been badly damaged this time and a blow has been struck for democracy.

Filleann an feall ar an bhfeallaire is cosúil.
What goes around comes around, it seems.

SOME MORE DETAIL:

Filleann an Feall ar an bhFeallaire
Treachery returns to the betrayer / The evil deed returns to the evil doer
What goes around comes around
an feall = the treachery/evil deed
an feallaire = the traitor/evil doer

An tseachtain seo caite,
seachtain = a week
an tseachtain = the week
caite = spent
an tseachtain seo atá caite = an tseachtain seo caite = last week

den chéad uair riamh,
an uair = the hour / the time
riamh = ever
an chéad uair = the first time
den chéad uair = for the first time

gearradh téarma príosúin ar xx = xx was sentenced to a prison term
gearradh téarma príosúnachta ar xx = xx was sentenced to a term of imprisonment
costas a ghearradh orm = to charge me a cost
príosún a ghearradh orm = to sentence me to prison
téarma príosúin = a prison term
téarma príosúnachta = a term of imprisonment

iar-Phríomhaire na hIodáile = the ex-Prime Minister of Italy
an Príomhaire = the Prime Minister
an t-aire = the minister
an tAire = the Minister
an Iodáil = Italy
xx na hIodáile = the xx of Italy

as calaois a bhaineann le ceannach Mediaset = because of fraud/deceit regarding the buying of Mediaset
go raibh maith agat as xx = thank you for xx
gearradh príosún air as calaois = he was sentenced to prison for deceit/fraud
an chalaois = the deceit / fraud
baineann xx le yy = xx has to do with yy / xx is in connection with yy
sin an xx a bhaineann le yy = that is the xx that has to do with yy / that is the xx that is in connection with yy
an ceannach = the buying

a chomhlacht mór meáin = his large media company (see NB below...).
an meán = the medium
na meáin = the media
cumhacht na meán = the power of the media
cumhacht na meán cumarsáide = the power of the communications media
na meáin chumarsáide = the communications media
NB ...since we speak of the media in the plural, perhaps a better Gaeilge original might be: “a chomhlacht mór meán” = his large media company
an comhlacht = the company/firm
obair an chomhlachta = the work of the firm/company

Íslíodh an téarma sin go láithreach, beagnach, go bliain amháin áfach = This term was lowered immediately, almost, to one year however.

This is a note from the new ‘Standard Irish’ (Caighdeán Oifigiúil):
“san aimsir chaite den saorbhriathar tá, e.g., Hardaíodh, (nó hArdaíodh), Do
hardaíodh agus ardaíodh le fáil sa chaint. measadh gurb é an ceann deiridh is
slachtmhaire sa scríobh.”

The above quotation makes “Íslíodh” correct in written Irish.
íslíodh xx = xx was lowered
you will often see and hear ‘híslíodh’ - I use this myself...

an téarma sin = that term
an xx sin = that xx
go láithreach = immediately
the ‘go’ is often left out = láithreach = immediately
(h)íslíodh xx láithreach = xx was lowered immediately
beagnach = almost

go bliain amháin = to one year

áfach = however

Tá dhá cheart acomhairc ag Silvio Berlusconi sular féidir é a chur i gcillín príosúin - sin dlí a chuir sé féin ar na leabhair. = Silvio Berlusconi has two rights of appeal before he can be put into a prison cell - that is a law he himself put on the books.

Tá dhá cheart acomhairc ag xx = xx has two rights of appeal
ceart = a right
an ceart = the right
ceart amháin = one right
dhá cheart = two rights
ceart beag amháin = one small right
dhá cheart bheaga = two small rights
an t-acomharc = the appeal
cás an acomhairc = the case of the appeal
tá an ceart agat = you are correct
tá ceart agat = you have a right

sular féidir é a chur = before he/it can be put
is féidir xx a chur = xx can be put
ní féidir xx a chur = xx cannot be put
cillín príosúin = a prison cell
an cillín príosúin = the prison cell
an príosún = the prison
i gcillín príosúin = in a prison cell
sin dlí a chuir sé féin = that is a law he himself put
sin xx a chuir sé = that is an xx he put
ar na leabhair = on the books
na leabhair = the books
an leabhar = the book
leabhar = a book

Shílfeá go raibh a fhios aige go mbeadh sé de dhíth air lá éigin.
You would think that he knew that he would need it some day.

Shílfeá = you would think
Go raibh a fhios aige! = That he may know! (a wish)
Go raibh an tsláinte aige! = That he may have health!
Shílfeá go raibh xx aige = You would think he had xx
Shílfeá go raibh an tsláinte aige = You would think he had the health
Shílfeá go mbeadh sé de dhíth air = You would think he needed it
Tá xx de dhíth orm = I need xx
lá éigin = some day

Ach bímis soiléir; ní chaithfidh an tUasal Berlusconi oiread is lá sa phríosún - chinntigh sé sin nuair a chuaigh sé leis an pholaitíocht.
But let us be clear; Mr Berlusconi will not spend as much as a day in prison - he made sure of that when he went into politics.

Ach = but
bímis soiléir = let us be clear
...this phrase is unusual for my ears in Irish, I would say:
Ba mhaith linn a rá go soiléir = We would like to say clearly
Caithimid (Caitheann muid) a rá go soiléir = We must say clearly
or
Ba mhaith linn a bheith soiléir = we would like to be clear
Caithimid a bheith soiléir = we must be clear

ní chaithfidh xx oiread agus lá ann = xx will not spend as much as a day there
ní bheidh oiread agus xx ann = there will not be as much as (an) xx there
oiread is xx / oiread agus xx = as much as (an) xx
‘is’ is regularly used in place of ‘agus’ with the meaning of ‘and’ in English
sa phríosún / sa bpríosún = in the prison
i bpríosún = in prison

chinntigh sé sin = he made sure of that
Rinne sé cinnte de sin = he made sure of that
nuair a chuaigh sé = when he went
leis an bpolaitíocht = with politics
polaitíocht = politics
an pholaitíocht = politics / the politics

Déarfadh go leor gurb é sin an fáth a ndeachaigh sé leis an bpolaitíocht sa chéad dul síos.
Enough people would say that that was the reason he went into politics in the first place.

Déarfadh go leor = Enough (people) would say
Deirim gurb é sin an fáth = I say that that is the reason
chuaigh sé = he/it went
an fáth a ndeachaigh sé = the reason he/it went
sa chéad dul síos = in the first instance

Mar sin féin, den chéad uair, tá téarma príosúin gearrtha air.
Even so, for the first time, he is sentenced to a prison term.

Mar sin féin = Even so
den chéad uair = for the first time
an chéad uair = the first time
Tá costas gearrtha air = A cost has been put on it
Tá costas gearrtha air = He/it has been charged a cost
Tá téarma príosúin gearrtha air = He has been sentenced to a term in prison

Tá an-dochar déanta air an uair seo agus tá buille buailte ar son an daonlathais.
He has been badly damaged this time and a blow has been struck for democracy.

Tá dochar déanta air = He/it has been harmed / damaged
Tá an-dochar déanta air = He/it has been greatly harmed /damaged
an uair seo = this time
agus = and
tá buille buailte = a blow has been struck
ar son an xx = for the sake of xx / for xx’s sake / for xx
ar son an rúin = for the motion
in aghaidh an rúin = against the motion
daonlathas = democracy
an daonlathas = democracy / the democracy
ar son an daonlathais = for the sake of democracy / on the side of democracy / for democracy

Filleann an feall ar an bhfeallaire is cosúil.
What goes around comes around, it seems.

Filleann xx = xx returns
Ticéad fillte = a return ticket
an feall = the dirty deed / the evil deed / the treachery / the foul
de bhárr an fhill = as a result of the evil deed / as a result of the foul
an feallaire = the traitor / the evil doer
is cosúil = it seems / it is likely
is cosúil go bhfuil xx go maith = it seems that xx is good
