What is the translation of smúdan in this context?

Dwelly's gives two sets of meanings. The first is a kiln or the smoke from a fire, especially a signal fire, but the second seems to fit your sentence much better: the "musical note of any singing bird" or a "wood pigeon" or a "turtle [dove?]".
