I know the basics of telling time in Irish.

It's 3 o'clock == Tá sé a trí a chlog

But how would you say something like

I leave at 3

My guess would be

Fágaim a trí a chlog

but that just feels wrong to me. What would be the correct way of saying it??

A word for "at" is missing: Fágaim ar a trí a chlog (less often: ... ag a trí a chlog)

And you would use future tense except you mean "I leave usually at ..."
Fágfaidh mé ar a trí a chlog

OK. I assume the difference between ar and ag is a dialectal thing.
I realize future tense makes more sense for my original sentence, but I haven't gotten to future tense in my learning yet.

Oh, follow up question.

"I normally leave at 3 o'clock" would be "Fágaim ar a trí a chlog de ghnáth"

or should the word order be different??

No, it is correct.

This is not entirely related, but you might consider the verb imeacht instead of fágáil for to leave

I prefer that verb myself. Until now I'd have said 'fágaim' was wrong because it's transitive, so it requires an object. However, the latest dictionary, 'An Foclóir Nua' gives it as both transitive and intransitive - recognising modern usage (presumably the influence of English). I was surprised to see that FGB (1977) also alllows it as intransitive.


Cúmhaí, the root form of Irish verbs is the 2nd person sing. imperative,and that's the way they appear in modern dictionaries, hence 'fág' rather than 'fágáil', 'imigh' rather than 'imeacht'.

Vitaee, you can use 'fágaim' or 'imím' (from 'imigh/imeacht' = 'leave,depart')
