Hello All!

I'm looking to get some confirmation and input on a few translations that I've found, but first I'd like to explain what I'm doing for the tattoo.

I'm quite fond of Irish and Scottish folklore, history, and culture. I visited Ireland last spring and it was more than I could have ever imagined. Through all my researching of the history and cultures, I stumbled on the Ogham Alphabet and was so intrigued by the way it's written.

So ultimately - I am looking to use the Irish Gaelic words for MAGIC - BEAUTY - FREEDOM - LEADER and translate them into Ogham drawn on an arrow. I have pictures for examples :).

Below are the words that I have found through my Research (with the translation offered) and my personal notes:

Draíocht - Magic,Enchantment. That which is unseen. I really like this word... but I of course want a true translation. I'd like to stick to the word Magic but I use this term as play on believing in what you cannot see - or faith.

Saoirse - Freedom, Liberty, Being who you are. I have seen this word used as a name pretty often in the states... Is it generally just used for a name, or is it also used in the language?

Dathúil - Good-looking, a Pleasure to the eyes. This is the term for Beauty I found... is it correct?

Taoiseach - Leader, Chief, Ruler - First among us. This may not be the word I'm really looking for... the intent is that I am a "born leader" type - a take charge - Type A personality type. I want this tattoo to remind me to always be me.

SO that's what I got - any and all help is more than welcome! I've read through some previous posts and you all have been so helpful and educational.

Below is a picture that sparked the idea. I hope it shows up :)

I can confirm Draíocht and Saoirse are correct.

Dathúil is ok to describe a good-looking person but I wouldn't use it as a general term for beauty. If you're talking about the beauty of nature or art or things like that then it's not the best choice, but if it's specifically about a handsome/pretty person then dathúil is fine.

Taoiseach is a political leader, historically it was the chief of a clan, and in modern times it's the title for Ireland's prime minister. So I don't think it's a good word at all. I can't really think of anything for "born leader" but maybe ceannaire (leader) could fit.

Álainn (Beautiful)
Áileacht (Beauty)
Ceannaire (Leader)

That you so much for your feedback!

I thought that word for leader might not be what I was looking for - haha I am no Prime Minister, that's for sure! But I think Ceannaire is perfect!

I am looking for a word for beauty that reflects the beauty of a person - more of a reminder to myself that I am beautiful and I don't need anyone else to tell me that. I will look at those words you suggested!

Again thank you!

Another, less frequently used word for beauty is aoibh, which more or less conveys the idea of something one delights in seeing.
