Wombat has finished the first draft of her PhD thesis so she now has more free time, and thought she'd pop in to say Haigh to her old pals on the forum.

Salut la Thèseuse (that's a French pun between someone who has just got her thèse accepted and who keeps quiet) - one of our family has just obtained her doctorate at Embrra - two days ago in fact. - conas tann tú, a chara?

For my PhD I developed an artificial life species with artificial intelligence that can do data mining.

artificial life = basically small programs whose behaviour is determined by a set of variables similar to our genes. When these programs mate, their genes recombine so that the offspring will have a blend of the features of both parents. Over time, the species can evolve to become better at whatever they need to do (in this case, data mining) to survive.

data mining = analyse data, find patterns, make predictions, etc.

I like the pun!

It's thrilling to be nearly finished, but also it feels very strange. For years now I have been constantly thinking about my PhD, and everything I did was part of the plan to finish my PhD. I had no time for any hobbies, and I've put a lot of things on hold (Gaeilge, mar shampla). I don't know what to do with myself next!
