Shiúlfaidís ós rud é...

dia daoibh aríst,

does this make any sense? "Shiúlfaidís ós rud é nach raibh ann ach siúlóid bheag" I want to say "They would walk as it was only a small walk" Would I be better using the ghnáthchaite here? I am talking about a walk they used to do on a regular basis...just when I ssay it in English (where Im from anyway) You would say They would... in this context...

It's been a long day and the word "would" is throwing me

Since it is continual action in the past I would opt for the Aimsir Ghnáthcaite - shiúlaidís. In the interest o f clarity I would use ''used to walk'' in English or Irish.

Semantics at this stage, but I would say this, possibly more natural to me:

shiúlaidís ós rud é nárbh ann ach siúlóid bheag

The expression is níl ann ach..., not ní ann ach..., so ós rud é nach raibh ann ach... is correct. You can't use nárbh.
