Come here till I tell ye a question, how do ye go about answer the "do you speak Irish" question in the census? I am not sure how to answer myself.

It doesnt ask your level. Normally If someone asks me that I would say not really.
I wouldnt consider myself and Irish speaker.
But I do speak it every day (Very badly) and engage in conversations every day with lots of people who speak it fluently.
So No isint really the answer either.

Of course most the 2 million who tick yes would struggle to ask for a glass of water.

I agree, the "Irish question" urgently needs to be revised, is far too ambiguous.

The question, I suppose, is asking you "if you speak Irish", not if you are an "Irish speaker".

From your question you do seem to speak Irish every day; so if I were you, I would say "yes".

I think that's the intention of the question. The government don't really want to know the real state of spoken Irish. They might be forced to do something about it then.
