I'm having some trouble with the constructions á + ainm briathartha and ag mo + ainm briathartha. I know "á" is made up of "ag + a" but the construction "ag mo" seems strange to me. Like in examples such as:

... pulling me onto the sofa to watch a film
...ag mo tharraingt go dtí an tolg chun féachaint ar scannán

...tying me down to this life
ag mo cheangal don saol seo


...taking endless showers and scrubbing myself with soap
ag tógáil ceatheanna gan stad agus ag mo sciúradh le gallúnach.


Are the above constructions ok grammatically?

They are correct in Donegal Irish (but the "g" of "ag" wouldn't be pronounced).
Eg. bhí sé 'mo thabhairt 'na' bhaile. (ag mo thabhairt...) & bhí siad a' mo thabhairt...

In Standard Irish you would have "do mo" instead of "ag mo". If I remember well, in Connemara they say "go mo" -- Bríd will correct me if I'm wrong

Thanks Lughaidh. That is strange then that in the Caighdeán it is "do mo" but "ag a" (á) for third person singular, no?

It's actually do a in the third person, which is simplified to á (dhá in Connemara )

It's not the only illogical thing in the caighdeán.

So would you stylise it as dom' ?

the same way that you would shorten "ag mo sciúradh"
to "ám sciúradh" ?

No, it's always do m(o) with the vowel being based on whether or not the VN begins with one (same as for mo v. m').

In Connemara, it's pronounced as go mo though.

That said, I've also seen people use it without the go, like Lughaidh mentioned for Donegal.

Ceart go leor go raibh maith agat a galaxyrocker! It's one of the harder things to get the hang of, I suppose because you don't come across it that often.

I don't know how common this is in the other dialects, but in Munster "am' = ag mo" often ignores lenition next to labials:

am' priocadh
am' bodhradh

It can even ignore back on to the wrong letter:

am' mualadh (bualadh)

I remember that in Corca Dhuibhne, m becomes b after these prepositions with the possessive -m:
ag mo mhuintir > aigem buintir.
I read this in some book about CD dialect.
