A friend spotted this in a local pub and asked if I could find out what it means.
"Tun cuiread do chupa thairis le slainte agus sonas"
Can someone please translate??

The first two words are misspelt, I think, and slainte should be sláinte. As it stands now, it would mean something like “Press they put your cup over him/is with health and joy”. It basically makes no sense.

Tún is quite a rare verb (at least I’ve never heard it actually used) meaning ‘to press food on someone; to urge someone to eat’, and cuiread is a very old form meaning ‘they put’—a form that hasn’t been used for centuries, as far as I know.

Wisdom is never on the menu, you have to own the restaurant.

If someone isn't used to reading old fonts, the "g" in gan can look like a "t", and the "a" can look like a "u", so the word gan was probably misread as "tun".

And, of course, in an older style font, cuireadh would be written without the "h" at the end, and with a dot instead over the "d".
