It is much clearer actually. It's kind of clicked a bit. I knew the vowels, but didn't know why they make such a difference to how the consonants are pronounced or what exactly the difference between a broad and slender consonant is. It'll make it way easier in the future. GRMA.

I'm scribbling out a quick guide now. You might get some value out of it.

Lughaidh knows the most about Irish phonology here, I would guess, as would Lon Dubh and Breandán. I'm just giving a rough guide, but my pronunciation is good, so I think it works

An allophone is a variant of one phoneme. If you switch from one variant to another, it doesn't change the meaning of the word. For instance, in English, if you replace the standard English r by a Scottish trilled r, the word remains the same. So standard English r and trilled r are allophones, ie. variants of the phoneme /r/.
When the word changes meaning if you replace a sound by another one, then the 2 sounds in question are "phonemes". In English, b and p are different phonemes, because "pay" and "bay" are different words.
