Is that legal?

As far as I know, yes, unless a site specifically and explicitly says "we will not sell your information" at the time you signed up.

What about data protection legislation - to use information only for the purposes gathered etc.? It seems mad that personal information can still be sold on in this day and age. I signed up when the site was in Irish hands; I wonder does that mean it would be covered under Irish law? This is getting very complicated. :pages:

Are there any solicitors/lawyers out there? We'll translate for free for free legal advice.
At least others will, because my Irish wouldn't be good enough.....

I don't know...even plain old garden-variety U.S. law is beyond me, without involving the internet.

The world is getting smaller, and life is getting a lot more confusing.

Posting rough translations with comments like "Wait for more" at this stage is unrealistic at best and, I would even venture, irresponsible. There simply aren't enough people left there to provide the required input to reach a safe translation.

My Irish is very poor but when I see an unanswered question at IGTF I've been giving it a try. I've been there for a long time but I only have a chance go on-site about once a day and then I only average 1 or 2 posts. I really enjoyed the camaraderie there and the sense of community that had developed. Here on ILF most people have very good Irish and it's rare that I come on-site to find an unanwered question. You've always been patient with me and tolerated my inadequate tries by correcting me gently. When I make my daily visit, there is rarely an unanswered post that I can take a stab at. I concur that with all the compotent translators gone posting my tenative tries, unvetted, could be viewed as irresponsible.

Sorry, kenailan, I couldn't resist a dig. I knew you meant well but it's frustrating being stuck on this side as the new owners rip the old site apart with their ads and spam.

I also know first hand just how addictive it is to log on and look for translations to do. I've had to answer more here than I would have liked over the past six months just trying to keep the site alive in case something like this happened at the old one.

Hopefully with more people here now we can get back something of the old balance of fun and translation that we had at the old site and there will be something for everyone.

And as we probably won't draw as many new requests as before, we need new ideas like the ones Saoirse is always coming up with. :GRMA:

Good idea. Since I'm unbanned at the moment, I've just done the same.

I'd recommend that anyone who can still post there do the same.

One possible issue with this:

I had no difficulty changing my email address, as well as other information, in my profile. When Tony tried to do so, however, the site wouldn't let him log back in until a confirmation email had been sent to the "new" email address. I don't know if this is a difference between regular users and "mini-mods," but it's something to be aware of. The default for these temporary addresses appears to be 15 minutes, but they will let you expand that. If you get the same message he did about needing to log in via a confirmation email, you might want to expand that time limit to make sure you can get back in and verify the changes.

I also read Lady Wombat's post, went and changed my email address. I didn't have any problems changing it. Hope the address I submitted doesn't belong to someone.

They don't. They're randomly generated, and only go to a temporary mailbox that self-destructs after a set period of time.

Turns out that I am now banned as well, for the offense of posting a link to a "commercial site" (i.e. this one). How totally dishonest they are. Changing people's posts and putting up fake ones, too -- it's as if we were in China!

When I logged on to IGTF tonight all threads were locked. Does that mean I am also banned? As I mentioned to Breandán, I only come on once or twice a day and look for a thread that I can take a try at translating but always with the proviso that I have poor Irish and this try at a translation needs to be vetted and confirmed by those who are proficient. Breandán pointed out to me that by doing so I was not really helping the poster because there was not likely to be sufficient people left on IGTF to confirm my tries. It seems, so far, that on ILF there is rarely any unanswered threads that I can take my tenative stab at while over on IGTF there was always some to be found. I continued to give these a try but started directeing them to ILF for confirmation. Unfortunately, out of the twenty or so I have done, only two or three have taken my advice and posted here. I guess my suggestion that the poster go to ILF to have my try confirmed has gotten me banned. It's not uncommon, now, on IGTF for a request to sit for many hours without a reply.
