Yeah, that's why I don't understand :) Why are some words replaced by English ones, and not others?
But if it becomes an Irish word ie. a normal thing that all speakers recognize as such, then we should Gaelicise its spelling, ie. writing "bac" :)

I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

I leave the forum for a bit and there's been an entire discussion based on my simple question.

I can't believe how busy this forum is getting..... or would that be faighing.....

baec, b'fhéidir - bheadh an c leathan mar sin, nach mbeadh?

(This reminds me of something, the Japanese have adopted the English words "up" and "down" into their language but the usage is different, they mean "to increase" and "to decrease", respectively. So, if you are ever on a Japanese ski slope and you see a sign saying "SPEED DOWN!", they actually mean "REDUCE SPEED!" - I found out the hard way. :panic: )

Oddly "back" is used widely in Connamara too. Although you'd think "ar ais" would be just as simple to say.

It is funny, isn't it? It reminds me of the time I was watching something on TV (I think it was Aifric) and someone said "an bhfuil tú all right?" Seemed it would be just as easy to say "go maith."

Ah, but there's very little logic in language, and various lingua francas (linguae francae?) have always influenced other languages.

Alright (olraidht?) is widely used, much more than "baic" :)

if you write "baec" you'd pronounce [bwæːkˠ] so it wouldn't work.
