Hello everyone,
I have decided to legally change my name to Irish as I wasn't happy with my English name. My surname is easy to translate, Ní Mhathúna, but my first name, Jordan, is proving to be a challenge. After doing some research I discovered that Siúrtáin could be the Irish equivalent, but it would be very modern to use it as a first name.
Could you tell me if Siúrtáin Ní Mhathúna would be acceptable as my name, would the Irish speaking community be annoyed? I know people from other countries would have a hard time pronouncing it but if they can't get it after I've told them three or four times, what can you do? Suggestions for a replacement Irish first name also welcome.

Because Jordan can be a male or a female name, I have to ask if you're a male or a female, because that WILL make a difference with your surname. As you have it now, it's a woman's maiden name.

There is no Irish equivalent for "Jordan." The best "Siúrtáin" would be would be a rough (very rough) attempt at a phonetic rendering. I don't think anyone would be offended, but it is pretty obviously "makey-uppy."

If you're going to go to that length anyway, why not just pick a real Irish name that appeals to you?

I recommend just changing your last name. Usually, nobody calls you by your last name anyway, so all of your friends and family can keep on calling you Jordan and you'll still have a cool Irish name as your last name. Also, as Redwolf said, you wouldn't want your first name to sound like a pretend, made-up name so it'd probably be better just to leave it the way it is.

Thanks for your quick responses. I am a unmarried woman so I use Ní Mhathúna. After thinking about it, I agree that using Siúrtáin would be a bit silly as it isn't a proper first name.

I'm currently considering using Laoise (which is my second name) as my first name and then putting Jordan as my second name because it'll be easier for everyone if Jordan is still in my name. So in full, my name will be Laoise Jordan Crístíona Ní Mhathúna.

The country/river Joran is An Iordáin. Iordáin would make more sense to me than Siúrtáin. But leaving it in English works too.
