A pencil case is usually translated as - mála peann luaidhe, but this would be 'flexible' - more of a bag than an actual case, what we call here - une trousse à crayons, but for those who can remember this kind of thing, I used to have a pencil case (un plumier) made of wood with a lid that slid open and a drawer that you turned to open. Would you call that - bosca peann luaidhe?

I do indeed remember the wooden ones and the metal ones too. Much nicer than plastic.

You could only call the fabric pencil cases "mála". It wouldn't be appropriate for the hard material ones.
I used "cása" in school. You also use "cása" in construction - concrete case.
