why do you transcribe "ch" as k/ck too, Redwolf? Isn't it better to explain what is the real sound? :)

She doesn't usually and she hasn't in this case. As she explained above, what she had given above was done by Conor years ago and I propose we tidy it up when we do the sound files.

Yep...I actually suggested we fix the pronunciations. They were done very quickly by Conor a loooong time ago. I just wanted to get the file over here quickly, as we only have so much time to work on it before St. Patrick's Day.

I would normally indicate broad "ch" as "kh" (with a more involved explanation of the sound below it it) and slender "ch" as "hy" (again, with a more involved explanation).

Yes, it needs to be up and visible all this week so people can find it. Those changes (kh, etc.,) and explanations of yours are good.

Perhaps we should have a locked sticky topic "St. Patrick's Greetings" (or similar heading) with just the working copy in it at the top of the forum and we'll fix it up in situ but keep the discussion in this thread?

Hi! I see this thread has strayed from its original topic by now, but I was just wondering, Why is it na Páidraig? Why is it plural?? (Same as things like na Gaelige, etc.)

:GRMA:

You mean, na féile?

It is true that the genitive plural of the definite article is na, but the genitive singular feminine form of an is also na. Both féile and Gaeilge are feminine nouns, hence na féile "of the festival", na Gaeilge "of (the) Irish (language)".

Actually, that was my mistake! I could have sworn that I saw na Páidraig initially!!! :hide:
I remember being really confused! :/

Oh well, at least I've gained new information from it anyway! More confusing feminine/masculine rules to work out! :( haha lol
I must say, I find that part easier in French!!!

Ohhh velll.

GRMA these might come in handy on Saturday at the parade - will have to carry them around written out !!!! I joined a little Irish conversation Group and the co-ordinator is marching with a group of Irish speakers - the co-ordinators of various other groups. What fun!

Thank you

Be sure to practice pronouncing them, as someone will inevitably ask you "how in the heck do you pronounce THAT???"
