We were discussing dog commands on Facebook just now. And I thought I'd share some of my own ones.

They do sit: suigh síos (sit down)

Goile (come)

Isteach (come in)

Tá an doras ag dúnadh (the door is closing) much more effective that “isteach” as they know the door is closing whether they’re in or not.

Dinnéar (dinner)

Gabh síos (get down) as in get down out of the room (I'm in the room and he's not). Also used for get down off my lap.

Gabh 'niar ( get down) as in get down from the kitchen or other room.

Gabh 'nuas ( get down) get down off the sofa etc

Toilet – yes I use the English word – they’re bi-lingual dogs.

Ciúnas ! (Quiet!) No barking. Especially when going out to toilet at nighttime, don’t wake the neighbours.

Seo ! (here!) when I’m tossing them food or ball

Tá carr ag tíocht ( there is a car coming) only used with my collie as he’s the only one allowed off lead when out walking. Then he will pull in to the side of the road, onto the grass verge.

Isteach ar an gcosán (onto the footpath)

Trasna (across) Meaning to them - cross the road here.

Fan (wait) again if off lead and he’s gone too far ahead. It can also be used for “stay” instead if preferred.

seachain (avoid)

Éist leis (leave it) When already in mouth.

Éistígí liom ! (leave me alone!) Mom is in a mood we will leave her alone.

Maybe Redwolf will share her Donegal version.
And somebody else the Munster version.
:)
