A cell is usually translated as - cill and this would mean more of a hermit's cell, if I understand it rightly. The cell I want to talk about is a prison cell or a dungeon in a castle. A dungeon obviously is - doinsiún, but would - cillín be appropriate here? In this story both terms are used interchangeably.

Yes that's what I meant - cill I imagine has come to mean a church (as in the many placenames you find) it's a bit like the word monastery, where a hermit went off to live alone somewhere (mono) and found himself (or herself - there were women who did it too) surrounded by people wanting his spiritual guidance.
