I am wondering about the form of the vocative of Ailean Dunn in the Ailein Duinn song. Why isn’t it Ailein Dhuinn with adjective lenited? Is it because of dentals-dots rule (does it work with attributive adjectives in Scottish Gaelic)?

In Irish I would expect a Ailein Dhoinn, and I believed the rules for lenition of adjectives in vocative are basically the same in Scottish.

The dentals rules is much more alive (for noun+adjectives) in Scottish Gaelic, and here it's the reason of the non-lenition of "duinn".
Irish would have "a Ailéin Dhoinn".

Thanks!

Does that mean that dentals rule always work in this context, or does it depend eg. on dialect? Would ‘oh, black cat!’ be then a chait duibh in contrast to Irish a chait dhuibh?

(And the singular vocative of cat should be a chait, right? Cause Wiktionary claims it’s a chat – shouldn’t that be corrected?)

It means that you'd say "a chait duibh" in Scottish Gaelic and "a chait dhuibh" in Irish.
I don't think the dentals' rule still applies in contemporary Irish when you have a noun+ an adjective. Maybe it existed long ago...
It still exists in Irish though when a noun is followed by another noun.
