Still struggling with sentence constuction. I am trying to say "My will is made of iron." What I came up with is "Is é déanta as iarainn mo thoil." which I don't think is right. Can someone point out my errors, please? GRMA

Verbal adjectives represent a "state". For adjectives or states, you use the verb tá rather than the copula:

Tá mo thoil déanta as iarann.

(Note that there is no i at the end of iarann)


FWIW, you could also change the emphasis as follows:

(Is) as iarann atá mo thoil déanta. "My will is made of IRON" literally "It is of iron that my will is made."

(Is) déanta as iarann atá mo thoil. "My will is MADE OF IRON" literally "It is made of iron that my will is."

(Is é) Mo thoil atá déanta as iarann "My WILL is made of iron" literally "It is my will that is made of iron."

That is, when you "front" a phrase for emphasis the copula may appear at the beginning.


Tá mo thoilse déanta as iarann. "MY will is made of iron." (unlike yours, etc.)

Is as iarann é (‘it’s [of] iron’), but tá sé déanta d’iarann (‘it’s made of iron’).

Always wait for at least three people to agree on a translation, especially if it’s for something permanent.

My translations are usually GU (Ulster Irish), unless CO (Standard Orthography) is requested.

FGB has: déanta as rud "made from sth"; déanta de "made of sth". There are certainly more examples with de than as, but I don't think as is necessarily wrong.

Mmm I'm no specialist of English, so I don't know what is the difference between "made from sthg" and "made of sthg" (actually I only know "made of sthg", I don't know the other ).
