I was going to mention this in a current thread, but decided that I would create a separate thread for it, with a subject heading making it easier to find in the future. Here's a link to a great article on Irish naming systems, which I think was already mentioned in a thread here a while back (I think I got it from this forum). The link takes one directly to a downloadable pdf of the article, which is 64 pages long.

If others want to add additional articles or web sites about names, this could become an informational thread for that (and maybe be moved to the resources section of the forum).

A very detailed article that describes the history of the Irish ethnonymic and familial nomenclature is given in Eoin/ John Mac Neill's article 'Early Irish Population-Groups: Their Nomenclature, Classification, and Chronology', Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy 29 (1911/1912) 59-114.
