Hi all,

I wanted to give this its own thread (even though it came up before). How would you translate into Irish the phrase "Say cheese" (spoken by a photographer to get people's teeth showing).

Focloir.ie gives three options: "Abair cáis/grian/aoibh". I personally think that the last two of the three are superior: they have the same "ee" sound as "cheese". This would achieve the same effect.

But in the thread linked at the bottom, An Cionnfhaolach instead proposed "Taispeánaigí bhúr ndea-aoibh". What would you say?

It is recommended that you always wait for three to agree on a translation.
I speak Connemara Irish, and my input will often reflect that.
I will do an mp3 file on request for short translations.

We just say, 'ispíní-í-í-í-í-í-í-í-í-í-í' as it emphasises the í just like in cheese. I cannot remember how that started though so I don't know if other people do that or not. Works perfectly with kids though. Anything like 'cáis' certainly doesn't work as it doesn't have the í/ee sound.
