dia daoibh aríst.

Tá ceist bheag a'm. An example sentence in Basic Irish reads "Tá fuinneog ann. Tá sí mór." So seeming "fuinneog" is a fem noun is it ok to use "sé" here instead of "sí"? I can't remember if I read somewhere (maybe I'm imagining things) that people don't bother changing between sé and sí depending on the gender of the noun and just use "sé" in every instance.

I was just wondering how much of a gramatical faux pas this is (if at all). If I were to go into an exam and use "sé" when refering to "fuinneog" would it be considered incorrect? (Maybe that's a bad example as it may depend on the exam/examiner etc.) I just can't remember being corrected in my school days for something like this, I'm pretty sure I always just used "sé" and I have had several "natives" teach me Irish. That's not me saying it's correct mind, just my experience.

'maith agaibh

I asked the same thing about the pharmacy earlier. Well the opposite, where I was scandalized when they called it sé. Someone explained that there are broad categories of nouns that are usually called sé or sí regardless of individual words' genders. I'm sure someone helpful and awesome will explain it to you.

Strictly speaking, you should use the grammatical gender of the noun (though common sense trumps grammatical gender...you wouldn't use "sé" for a girl, for example, even though "cailín" is grammatically masculine). Usage can vary from region to region, though (some nouns may be masculine in one Gaeltacht and feminine in another), as can pronunciation (sometimes the sound of "sí" and "sé" can be very similar, especially to a learner). I've never heard of people not bothering to use the correct pronoun, though, other than when we're playing Fiche Ceist and the noun is unknown.

I read somewhere (maybe in An Teanga Bheo: Gaeilge Uladh) that usually in Donegal, you use "sé" for male people and animals, "sí" for female people or animals, and "sé" for most other things (where you'd use "it" in English).
