I need help translating the following line (Connacht please):

With sleep, find peace. Let earth cradle you until we call you again.

When you say 'earth' do you mean the soil ie what's in the ground or do you mean the planet Earth?

If this is for someone who has died, perhaps "cré" (clay) would be a good choice for "earth."

If it's to be 'cré', I'm not at all sure how the idea of it being able to cradle someone would be understood in Irish. Perhaps the 'cré' itself could become a cradle ?

For the first part -
Go dtuga tú suaimhneas leis an suan agat (a suggestion)

Looking at Foclóir I can't find a good word for "cradle" as a verb. But looking for synonyms "shelter, protect, support" I think "cumhdaigh" is a good word. And it follows the often used blessing " go gcumhdaigh Dia thú".

So maybe -

Codáil go sámh. Go gcumhdaigh an chré thú go nglaoifaidh (spelling?) muid aríst ort.

More literally instead of "codáil go sámh" you could say - "Faigh suaimhneas trí chodladh". / (or keeping the same tense as the following sentence - Go bhfaigh (spelling?) tú suaimhneas trí chodladh.)

btw suaimhneas pronounced in Conamara like -Siabhrias.

Yes, Redwolf, someone who's about to die.

Franc, I suppose it could be both things--soil as well as The Earth. "The Earth" makes it more poetic in English, which would be nice to have in the Irish.

Bríd, "cumhdaigh" works for me.

Go gcumhdaigh an chré thú go nglaofaidh muid aríst ort.
The "i" drops out of glaoigh in the future tense.

Go bhfaigh (spelling?) tú suaimhneas trí chodladh

Go bhfaighe tú suaimhneas trí chodladh

:GRMA:

I think I may have made a mistake with codáil - no síneadh fada.

Just a suggestion, go gcumhdaigh, looked a bit odd to me and I think I know why!

The "go" here seems to be the subjunctive particle, but cumhdaigh is in the imperative (ordering tense)

I know the subjunctive isn't really heard in speech anymore except for a few petrified phrases: go raibh maith agat, go raibh biseach ort.

Codail go sámh. Go gcumhdaí an chré thú...... may the earth cover you...

Cumhdaigh an chré thú ....let the earth cover (protect) you....

Cian

My spelling is total crap I know. :D
It is the subjunctive I meant alright.

It's not just petrified phrases, in Conamara anyhow. It is often used to wish something, in toasts, and in particular in prayer. I like to use it in circumstances like this. But one can always use the imperative instead. And as with all translations there is always more than one way to say it correctly. The more suggestions the better.
