Sorry for this beginners question but why: tapaidh / thapaidh ?

My dictionary says: to seize an opportunity - is there are wider meaning - relating to the sentence?

I wish I was the fastest reader in the world.
Ba bhrea liom is mise an leitheoir ba thapaidh ar an domhan.
or
Is trua nach mise an leitheoir is tapaidh sa domhan.

"Tapaidh" in this case is a variation of "tapa": quick/fast/speedy.

"Tapaigh" is often used in the sense of "grasp," but it can also mean "quicken," so the two words are definitely related.

They are probably related thru the root 'tap', which is hardly a shock

Ba bhreagh liom bheith ar an léightheoir is tapamhla/ba thapamhla sa domhan.
Or, perhaps something like:
Ba bhreagh liom bheith ar an nduine is tapamhla léigheamh sa domhan.

In English, technically you'd want the subjunctive ("I wish I were the fastest reader in the world"). In Irish, this is one for which I'd definitely use something along the lines of "Is trua."

"Is trua nach mise an léitheoir is tapaidh sa domhan." (following the pattern of "Bean Pháidín," as Bríd mentioned).

Wait for more on that, though.
