Hi

I'm looking for someone to help me translate a tattoo phrase into Irish Gaelic.

"My daughter, my angel, my life"

Hope someone "out there" can be of assistance to this Norwegian :).

Haigh Morten Fearthaim fáilte ort 'dtín fóram.

My daughter, my angel, my life:

"M'iníon, m'aingeal, mo shaol"

or in older spelling:

"m'inghean, m'aingeal, mo shaoghal"

Wait for further input!

Edited to fix "iníon" typo.

Edited to fix iníon........again!

You haven't quite fixed it, a chara. You've got a stray [b] in there.

Does this mean that the spelling in old Irish "m'inghean, m'aingeal, mo shaoghal", has no objections?

Well, I would go with either the modern spelling OR use the old spelling with an old script, in which case the h's would be replaced with dots above the preceding consonant.

So, either:

M'iníon, m'aingeal, mo shaol

OR

M’inġean, m’aingeal, mo ṡaoġal

As mentioned in other threads, this construction is used for talking _about_ your daughter, as in a caption on a photo, etc. If calling _to_ your daughter, the vocative case would be more appropriate. :prof:

So which would be more appropriate in a tattoo? If it has been mentioned earlier it must have been written in gealic, which I don't understand ;) .

The choices you've been given both work, and both are in Irish Gaelic (which is usually just called Irish now). The one is just older in form than the other. It's really a matter of what looks best to you. The modern version can also be written in the older font, if you like. You save a bit of space with the version using a dot over a letter in stead of an "h" after it, in case that matters.
