My friend is Irish, and we were discussing the differences in language. He asked a few people, and came to the conclusion that "drop it like it's hot" is virtually impossible to translate into Irish. Is this true? They all agreed "bounce it like it is hot" would be the closest you could get?

"Scaoil é mar a bheadh sé te", Let it go as though it would be hot, would be fairly close I think,

"Lig dó titim...", Let it fall..., might also be worth considering.

'Bounce it...' is "Bain preab as...", or something like that.

IIRC this has come up before. I would consider Scaoil é to be Béarlachas. Scaoil leis is what I'd say.

Yes, "scaoil leis" is to let it go.

"scaoil é" has a different meaning - untie it. Like to untie a knot or a rope etc.


Let it remain still.


Lig dó titim / Lig cead dó titim - Let it fall.

Letting go or letting it fall is not the same as bounce.
The dictionary has "preab". I can't think of another word at the moment other than the Conamara bounsáil.

I'd be more likely to say - hit it against the wall/floor etc (if it is bouncable it will do that)
Buail in aghaidh an bhalla é.

I got "scaoil é.." from the phrase "tarraing agus scaoil" which I now see from your explanation means let loose or unfasten, and it makes perfect sense.

The reason I suggested - fág marbh é - is because I was looking for how to say 'forget it' and in Beo! that's what they have. Here's the context -
