Since I'm new to learn this language I might be asking a lot of questions at first on how to sound out letters. I do try before trying to post the questions on here but my recordings just aren't great. I just would like it if someone could double check if I am getting the vowel sounds right, please. Thanks :)

í = ee

é = eh

á = aw

ó = ooh

ú = oo

i = as in shin

e = as in get

a = as in top or tap

o = oh (quickly)

u = oo as in book

If any of this needs to be corrected or someone has a better way of remembering how these vowels sound, please by all means correct me. Thank you very much for your time. :)

but it's long

á = aw

or a long eh-sound in Ulster

Quote:
ó = ooh

long "oh", (or long aw most of the time in Ulster)

Quote:
u = oo as in book

depends on the word. Sometimes it's a short oo sound, sometimes it's a short o sound...

The a sound also varies greatly from word to word and dialect to dialect.

I'm making the assumption you're an American here:

é = ay (but don't close to the dipthong...it's like a Mexican Spanish "é" or a Latin "é").

If you're not, feel free to disregard.

Your assumption must be correct, because "o in top" is /o/ in other dialects and the sound celticlady is trying to describe would have to be described as "the u in cup (or the a in tap)", i.e.:

a = the u in cup or the a in tap (among other sounds)

In any case, as Redwolf says, the long vowels are definitely pure long vowels, not diphthongs.
