I'm a firefighter trying to get the Irish words for "Survivor" and "Warrior" tattooed on my wrists. I really want to make sure I find the proper translation for obvious reasons. Any help is appreciated. Thank you very much!

Victoria

Welcome to the forum, Victoria. :wave:

Marthanóir = Survivor
Laoch = Warrior/Hero

But wait for more suggestions before you get the ink.

I'll third the two terms, but add that there is another word for "Warrior" Gaiscíoch that you might like to consider. Much of a muchness. Just a matter of which you prefer for sound, appearance, and balance.

Originally, marthanóir was a legal term for "A person who outlives others sharing a joint interest; spec. a joint tenant who inherits the estate on the death of the other joint tenant", but I see its meaning is expanding into other areas such as biology and policing. :yes:

In old font:

Marṫanóir
Laoċ

and for comparison:

Gaiscíoċ

To me "laoch" is a hero, before meaning warrior - you can be a laoch without being a warrior.
The first meaning of gaiscíoch, though is warrior (it can also mean hero since in the Irish mythology, all heroes were warriors and vice-versa :mrgreen: )

Isn't that why laoch is better for a firefighter? I'm assuming that Victoria doesn't kill people on the battlefield, but is a "warrior" in the heroic sense (battling to save people's lives and property).

A gaiscíoch is "someone who performs brave feats/deeds".
