Séamus, the grumpy old man, is a great character in Ros na Rún, but I can't understand a word he says. He has a very strong Conamara accent, talks very fast, and I think the actor often slurs his words because the character is supposed to be drunk.

So this is my request to all you Ros na Rún fans. After you watch an episode, can you write out one or two of Séamus' lines? It doesn't have to be much, just a phrase or two that I can listen out for when I replay the episode on tg4 player. The English subtitles are not much help to me, so I'd really appreciate being able to read some of his lines in Irish.

I have huge difficulty understanding him too. I think there used to be a way of getting subtitles in Irish. Did I imagine that or are they no longer available or what's the story?

Nope...no subtitles in Irish, sadly.

I very rarely understand Séamus without peeking at the English subtitles, but if I do pick something up, I can post it. I watch Ros na Rún faithfully (usually view it on Wednesday and Friday afternoons).

I think they were available through teletext (aertel) page 888.
But that's gone now with the digital.
Only in Ireland though.

Is there no digital alternative on Saorview Bríd? I will try it on Sky tomorrow night. It was 887 on Aertel.

I can barely understand Séamus either, even when he's mixing English words into his Irish. I think its a mixture of the Character being old, drunk & having little English. I've heard him do interviews and he's a lot clearer, fluent English too

Séamus is typical of a lot of especially older Conamara speakers.

Just checked - we do have Aertel, I though it would be only available online.
It looks like subtitles aren't available through the Aertel pages though. Instead you press the subtitle button on the remote control. That does give Irish as an option on TG4, but not on the programme currently showing. I'll try that next time I'm watching Rós na Rún (not tomorrow tough).

Dea-scéal! Good news on the subtitles issue. Ros na Rún has just started and the Irish subtitles are available on page 887.

The Irish subtitles are over the English ones so it looks a bit messy at times. Much better than nothing for someone who wants them.

Yes, no bother. I use the old pre-digital remote control for the subtitles and it works no problem.
