Post subject:  Reading Irish with pre-reform spelling

If you read something published before the sixties, it will probably use pre-reform spelling. Don't be intimidated; before long, you'll get used to ignoring some of those bizarre-looking letter combinations. Here are the most common simplifications made during the spelling reform:

-ighim → -ím
-éighim → -éim
-ughadh → -ú
-adha- → -ú-
-aidheacht → -aíocht
-aidhe → -aí
-eamhail → -iúil
-idhe → -í
-aedhea- → -ae-
-aogha- → -ao-
