The sound is actually somewhere in between a "th" sound and an Irish soft "r",

According to what I hear and to what has been transcribed by several linguists, it is simply [ð] or [θ], ie. just as the 2 English "th" sounds.

As I understand it, that pronunciation is spreading to some other parts of the Gaeltachd and to second-language learners, because the Lewis dialect is used in a lot of teaching materials, but it is not universal.

I know and that's why I said it was Lewis :) . Actually I think it is used in Harris and in Uist too.

So how would I pronounce seanmhair? Thanks guys

The pronunciation would be roughly "SHENN-uh-vur". Although that extra "a" that I showed above in an older form of the spelling (seanamhair) is no longer written, it is still pronounced.

Thats really interesting alhough in the Irish standard we write sean-Ghaeilge in Munster we still have the a
Seana-Ghaodhaluinn or Seanamháthair
