G'day

I want to get the word "family" tattooed on myself in Scottish Gaelic. I've done a bit of research and have come up with the words "muinntir" and "teaghlach" but need some conformation on which word is best suited for me before I get it permanently placed under my skin. The context in which I mean "family" is my parents, brother and sister. I don't live in the same house as my parents and brother and I'm not married and don't have kids. So I was thinking "muinntir" but as I said I need some conformation.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers :D

Without knowing specifically how the terms are distinguished in Scottish, your conclusion would be correct in Irish: muinntir would be the better word.

Teaghlach is a derivative of teach ‘house’, and its base meaning (in Irish) is ‘household’.

Best to wait for someone who knows their Scottish to confirm that this is also the case there, though. :)

The problem with "muinntir", is that it means "family" only when it is qualified by some possessive: mo mhuinntir (my family), muinntir Iain (Iain's family), but when it stands alone, it only means "people".

Teaghlach is ok to say "family", though.

I agree with Lughaidh that teaghlach is what you want in this case. It is much more widely used for "family" in Scottish Gaelic than it is in Irish, especially in a generic use of the type you propose.
