As a background, my father was a third generation immigrant to America. He was immensely proud of his Irish heritage (with a surname O'Connell, how can you not be!?). He passed away last year and I wanted to get my first tattoo in memory of him.

I have tried to do my proper due diligence. I apologize if this gets more complicated. My brother wanted to do 'Remember to laugh' but remember (cuimhnigh) threw him since the Irish translation threw him. Anyways, I wanted to do a tattoo in Irish with some kind of proverb or, I dunno (this is where I struggle), just something that represented him.

I was hoping someone could provide some guidance and translations for Irish sayings or proverbs about laughter or mirth being used as a strength or shield.

This is an Irish proverb in English. I thought if you take the first part, the rest would be understood.

"Gáire maith agus codladh fada." - A good laugh and a long sleep . . .

But then you suggested "Remember to laugh" and didn't seem to like the word "cuimhnigh" so how about . . .

"Bíodh gáire maith agat." Have a good laugh.
