Hi there,
just using this section to run a few patterns past people and use the other thread for 'clean' sentences.

Here are the first set. I've attempted to place fronted patterns second. I'd appreciate if ye could check them

There are some patterns near the end I'm missing.

This thing is good/Tá an rud seo go maith
Good is that/ Is maith sin;is maith an rud é sin

a man (who/that) is there is good/ Tá fear (atá) ansin/ann go maith
the man (who/that) is there is good/ Tá an fear (atá) ansin/ann go maith

Good is a man (who/that) is there/ Is maith é fear atá ansin ???
Good is the man (who/that) is there/ Is maith é an fear atá ansin

it is good/ Tá sé go maith/ tá sé sin go maith
Good it is/ Is maith é

Eating/to eat is good/ tá an t-ithe go maith
Good is the eating/ Is maith an t-ithe é

Séan is good/ Tá Seán go maith
Good is the fun/ is maith an spraoi é

The coffee is good/ Tá an caife go maith
Good is the coffee/ Is maith an caife é

Who/what/how much is good? ???
Good is how much? ???

How much/many is/are good? ???
Good is how much/many? ???
How it is is good
Good is how it is

ok
Quote:
a man (who/that) is there is good/ Tá fear (atá) ansin/ann go maith

sounds odd even in English...

Quote:
the man (who/that) is there is good/ Tá an fear (atá) ansin/ann go maith

I'd say: An fear atá ansin, tá sé (go) maith.
Quote:
Good is a man (who/that) is there/ Is maith é fear atá ansin ???

odd

Quote:
Good is the man (who/that) is there/ Is maith é an fear atá ansin

is maith an fear atá ansin.
Quote:
it is good/ Tá sé go maith/ tá sé sin go maith

yes, or Tá sin (go) maith

Quote:
Good it is/ Is maith é

yeah but I think people would rather say Is maith sin.

Quote:
Eating/to eat is good/ tá an t-ithe go maith

I'd say "Tá ithe (go) maith" but it sounds odd. People would rather say "Tá sé (go) maith bheith ag ithe"
Quote:
Good is the eating/ Is maith an t-ithe é

sound odd even in English.

Quote:
Séan is good/ Tá Seán go maith

ok

Quote:
Good is the fun/ is maith an spraoi é

ok

Quote:
The coffee is good/ Tá an caife go maith
Good is the coffee/ Is maith an caife é

ok

Quote:
Who/what/how much is good? ???

Who is good = Cé atá (go) maith?
What is good = Cad é atá (go) maith?
How much is good = sounds odd

Quote:
Good is how much? ???

?????????????
Quote:
How much/many is/are good? ???

How many are good = Cá mhéad acu atá (go) maith?

Quote:
Good is how much/many? ???

sounds odd

Quote:
How it is is good
Good is how it is

mmm why don't you try to translate "natural" sentences?

Lughaidh,
thanks, your perusal is much appreciated.

Why don't I translate natural sentences? I'm all for that indeed; I just wanted to test the boundaries.

It's late here now (after 12) and I've been writing all day, so I'll post more in the morning

Jay

Here are the checked sentences:

This thing is good = Tá an rud seo go maith
Good is that = Is maith sin;is maith an rud é sin
the man who is there is good = An fear atá ansin, tá sé go maith
Good is the man who is there = is maith an fear atá ansin.

it is good = Tá sé go maith/ tá sé sin go maith/tá sin (go) maith
Good it is = Is maith é; is maith sin [better]

Eating/to eat is good =tá ithe go maith; tá sé (go) maith bheith ag ithe

Séan is good = Tá Seán go maith
Good is the fun = is maith an spraoi é

Who is good = Cé atá (go) maith?
What is good = Cad é atá (go) maith?
How many are good = Cá mhéad acu atá (go) maith?

As for constructions like 'how it is is good' and such, I say them and I've heard others in English use them too. Other examples are 'where it is is at the back of the fridge', or 'when it was was at the Christmas party last year'. Usually it is used to bring to a point some information on a topic

ok, maybe, I'm not a native speaker of English as you may know and I don't understand these sentences...

Yeah, here's how it might work, such sentences:

Two people have been arguing about where a show had been a number of years prior:

A: It was at the Odeon, I think
B: Mmmm, maybe. It could've been the Ritz, I'm thinking. Mark was working down there at the time
A: umm, yeah. Could be
C: ah, I'll tell yeah; yeah,
A: ah -
C: where it was was at the Carlton. You remember, it was moved. Some renovations or something at the Odeon
B: ahhh, I know what you -I remember! You're right!
A: was it?
B: yeah [etc]

Going on memory, there is usually some sort of build up or contestation involving some point or other and the construction serves to 'point' the information (place it in relief)

While there are many , many ways of saying things in English (it's tough to say something unidiomatically  ), I agree with Lughaidh in that some of those sentences are fairly unnatural.

so basically it means "It was at the Carlton"... with emphasis on the place.
It would be:

Ins an Charlton a bhí sé

@Lughaidh: Here's a linguist's take on the "is, is" and "was, was" phenomenon, with several examples. http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/language ... 01139.html
