Hello,

I'm hoping to get some help or clarification on a phrase I'm hoping to use in a tattoo. I want to make certain the translation into gaelic of "Family Above All" or "Family Over Everything" is correct...

I've been given "Teaghlach Thar Aon Ní Eile", but I've also had "Teaghlach Thar Gach Uile Ní" and "Muintir Thar Gach Uile Ní" offered up as tranlations. I understand the difference between "Teaghlach" & "Muintir" as the difference between immediate family as opposed to the whole family tree, however I don't understand the rest of the differences between the two phrasaes...

All help is GREATLY appreciated, I want to be as certain as possible to be accurate.

Not much difference really.

Teaglach thar aon ní eile (Family over anyone else)
Teaglach thar gach uile ní (Family over everyone else)

Aon ní eile literally means ‘any other thing’; gach uile ní literally means ‘all and everything’ (or just ‘everything’).

Both are common and correct; which you use is entirely up to you. The difference is much like that in English between ‘above all (else)’ and ‘above everything’: just two different ways of saying pretty much the same thing.
